Oil Prices Drive Energy Costs Even Higher

Energy costs are front page news.  Recent weeks have brought oil prices to record highs with blame being placed on issues in Iraq, Iran, and Nigeria.  Last month’s MSN Money headlines alert, “Oil back over $70; gas heads to $3; it’s only April -- and hurricane season is still six weeks away -- but pump prices have jumped a penny a day for the last month. Stocks recoil." Not a day goes by without stories about

  rising gasoline and oil prices, inefficiencies in the nation’s electricity grid systems, or pending legislation aimed at minimizing large tariff increases. 

Where are electricity savings?

Maryland, DC, and Delaware:

New SOS (Standard Offer Service) rates have been approved for Maryland and DC to begin this June.  DC businesses will be paying a 10% increase in electricity rates.  Maryland businesses will be experiencing even higher increases, ranging from 14 to 53%.  Delaware businesses will also see double-digit increases scheduled to occur this month.  Members in DC, DE, and MD should contact APPI immediately to learn about opportunities to lower electricity costs.

Massachusetts, New York, and Texas:

These markets continue to be competitive for electricity options.  Electricity rates with local utilities increased over the past several months from 45 to 119%.  Businesses in MA, NY, and TX should contact APPI to identify the best “fixed rate” option that will create budget certainty and alleviate future price increases.  Additionally, those business locations that have an electricity contract expiring in 2006 should contact APPI immediately.
